Will AI "Learn" or "Remember" what I tell it?

AI is becoming a big part of how businesses work today. But one big question people have is, Will AI remember what I tell it?

Evan Connell, a Consulting Manager at SOLVD.cloud, explains how AI handles information and what businesses can do to keep their data safe.

How AI Learns

AI doesn’t think the way people do. It doesn’t have a memory like humans. Instead, it is trained using a huge amount of text data. AI reads this data and learns patterns to predict what comes next in a conversation.

“When you ask an AI a question, it predicts what the next word should be, then the next, and so on until it forms a complete response,” says Evan Connell, SOLVD.cloud Consulting Manager.

Does AI Keep Your Data?

The answer depends on the AI provider. Some AI tools save chat history and may use it to improve their models. Others don’t store or use your chats for training at all.

In the early days of ChatGPT, OpenAI kept chat logs and used them to train future versions. Now, there is an option to turn this off. If this setting is off, OpenAI still keeps chats for a short time (about three months) but doesn’t use them for training.

Other AI providers handle data differently:

  • Anthropic’s Claude AI does not use chats for training by default.
  • Google’s Gemini AI may save data unless you are on a paid plan.
  • Salesforce’s Einstein Trust Layer scrambles sensitive data before sending it to an AI model, making sure customer information stays private.

How to Keep Your Data Safe

There are a few ways to use AI safely:

  1. Check the settings – Many AI tools let you turn off data storage.
  2. Use a paid plan – Most paid versions of AI models do not use your data for training.
  3. Use private AI – Some businesses set up AI systems on their own servers, so data never leaves their company.
  4. Use AI gateways – Some services, like Salesforce’s Einstein Trust Layer, add an extra level of security to protect customer data.

“The safest way to use AI is with a private setup where your data stays inside your company,” says Evan Connell.

Final Thoughts

AI is a powerful tool, but businesses need to be careful about how they use it. Before choosing an AI provider, check their privacy settings and make sure your data is secure.

As a rule, I'm pretty stingy with my recommendations. So it's a pleasure for me to recommend Solvd as a top-flight Salesforce consultancy. Solvd recently led our company's conversion to the Lightning interface and did it on time, on budget and made it easy for me and my team. I know I'll use their services again, and am confident they can do the same for you.
