Spiff Part 7: Working with Quota Tables

Commission plans are rarely as simple as offering a flat-rate payout. Typically, sales representatives need to hit specific targets or quotas before they can earn their full commissions. That’s where quota tables in Spiff become essential.

In this post, we explore how to work with quota tables in Spiff and leverage them to automate and refine your commission calculations.

What are Quota Tables in Spiff?

Quota tables in Spiff are centralized tools where you house your reps’ targets. These tables allow you to define the goals for your sales team—whether monthly, quarterly, annually, or a mix of different cadences—making your commission logic much more dynamic and adaptable.

Setting Up a Quota Table

Begin by creating your quota table within the relevant plan folder inside Spiff. When naming the quota table, remember that no spaces are allowed. For example, you might simply call it quota_table.

Next, you’ll determine the quota cadence. While Spiff recommends setting quotas monthly for frequent feedback and more granular adjustments, the system supports quarterly and annual cadences as well. Many companies operate with quarterly quotas, but you can adapt this to fit your organization’s unique commission structures. You can even have multiple quota tables for reps working towards both quarterly and annual objectives.

Adding Members and Goals

After creating the table, it’s time to assign reps and specify their targets. Add members to your quota table—like Ava, as in our example video—and set their goals for each relevant time period. For instance:

  • Q1 2024: $130,000
  • Q2 2024: $150,000
  • Q3 2024: $170,000
  • Q4 2024: $200,000

You’ll notice that Spiff generates the appropriate spaces for each cadence (like quarters) across your chosen date range. You can quickly edit and enter values for each rep and for each period.

Leveraging Quota Data for Dynamic Commission Calculations

Quota tables do more than just organize goals—they enable dynamic references within your compensation logic. By using functions similar to those in Excel, you can pull quota values directly into worksheets in Spiff. For instance, the quota function lets you reference a specific rep’s quota for a particular period.

This means you can automatically compare actual attainment against quota values, determine if a rep has surpassed their target, and apply accelerators or special commission rates based on performance. The calculations update dynamically as the periods and quotas change, streamlining what would otherwise be a laborious process in spreadsheets.

Why Quota Tables Matter

With properly configured quota tables:

  • You can centralize, update, and multiply goals with ease.
  • Your commission math remains flexible—adjusting seamlessly for new quotas or changing team structures.
  • Automated calculations reduce manual errors and administrative overhead.
  • You can create advanced commission structures—such as tiered payouts or accelerators for overachievement—without complex workarounds.

Quota tables will continue to play a central role as you build out your commission plans in Spiff. They empower seamless integration between your sales goals, compensation rules, and even Salesforce, ensuring your reps are rewarded accurately and on time.

As a rule, I'm pretty stingy with my recommendations. So it's a pleasure for me to recommend Solvd as a top-flight Salesforce consultancy. Solvd recently led our company's conversion to the Lightning interface and did it on time, on budget and made it easy for me and my team.
