Jetstream: how to export object metadata

Exporting object metadata from Salesforce can be a critical task for various business processes such as integration with third-party platforms or data migration. Whether you are migrating from another platform to Salesforce or moving away from Salesforce to a different tool, having a clear understanding of object metadata—including field labels, API names, types, lengths, formulas, and picklist values—is essential.

Why Export Object Metadata?

There are several scenarios where exporting object metadata can prove beneficial:

  • Integration with Third-Party Platforms: When setting up integrations, it is crucial to have precise field mappings to ensure data flows correctly between systems.
  • Data Migration: Migrating data from another platform into Salesforce requires a thorough understanding of how your data will align with Salesforce objects.
  • Transitioning from Salesforce: If you are planning to move your data to a different tool, knowing your existing metadata will help in reconfiguring your environment.

Despite its importance, Salesforce does not offer a straightforward, out-of-the-box solution for comprehensive metadata exports. However, a powerful tool named JetStream provides a solution that can simplify this process significantly.

Utilizing JetStream to Export Object Metadata

JetStream offers a suite of tools designed to enhance your Salesforce experience, particularly for exporting object metadata. Here’s how to use JetStream:

  1. Access JetStream: You can either use the web app or download the local version. After launching the tool, authenticate with your Salesforce org. This can be done with either a production or a sandbox environment.
  2. Navigate to Export: Locate the Developer Tools section and find the option to export object metadata.
  3. Select Objects and Fields: JetStream allows you to select multiple objects for export at once. In this example, let’s choose the Account object. You’ll see a list of related fields and metadata options that you can select for export.
  4. Download Metadata: After selecting the fields you need, click the download button. Save the file to your machine, which can be opened in Excel or uploaded to Google Drive for further analysis.

Reviewing the Exported Metadata

Once you’ve exported the metadata, you will be able to review the information in a structured format. The Excel sheet will include fields such as name labels, field types, formulas, and whether fields can be set as null, among other details. This organized view helps in creating import templates or in setting up integration mappings effectively.

JetStream significantly reduces the time spent on these tasks, allowing you to focus on more strategic initiatives within your organization.

As a rule, I'm pretty stingy with my recommendations. So it's a pleasure for me to recommend Solvd as a top-flight Salesforce consultancy. Solvd recently led our company's conversion to the Lightning interface and did it on time, on budget and made it easy for me and my team. I know I'll use their services again, and am confident they can do the same for you.
