Until now, many AI models have been great at doing tasks where there’s a clear right answer—like math. But creative work, like writing a short story, doesn’t have a single “correct” answer. So how does an AI know it’s doing well?

Reinforcement learning teaches an AI to think through a problem step-by-step. It learns which paths lead to good results and tries to follow those paths again. But that’s easy with math, where the answer is clear. It’s much harder with creative tasks.
Still, OpenAI’s new model wrote a 1,200-word short story called A Machine-Shaped Hand. And even though not everyone loved it, many people did.
