How to structure AI Agents to work for your business

Many business leaders want to use AI but aren’t sure where to start. In a recent SOLVD.cloud webinar, Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager, explained how to bring AI into your company without wasting time or money. His advice? Start small and build smart.

“Step one is not to start buying a bunch of tools… it’s giving your team access to tools and encouraging their use.” — Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager

Let’s walk through how you can use AI agents—smart software tools that act like digital coworkers—to make your business run better.

Start with a Clear Strategy

Before buying new software, pause and ask: What do we want AI to help us do? How will we know it’s working?

You need your leadership team to agree on what matters most. Without this, you risk investing in tools that don’t solve real problems.

Test Tools from the Bottom Up

Give your team access to easy tools and let them try things. Often, this shows where AI could really make a difference.

“A lot of times through that process, the best places to put the money… bubble to the top.” — Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager

When your team says, “If we had a tool to do this, it would save hours,” that’s when you know where to focus.

When You’re Ready, Build or Buy Agents

Now comes step three: strategic adoption. This is where AI agents come in.

So, what is an AI agent?

It’s a tool powered by AI, like ChatGPT, that can follow instructions, take action, and adjust as it goes. It’s like a helpful digital teammate.

“A human might give an agent a task, and then it’s able to act, observe, and decide what to do next.” — Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager

How Do AI Agents Work?

Agents have three key parts:

  1. The Brain – A language model (like GPT-4) that thinks and acts.
  2. The Context – The data it needs, like customer info or task details.
  3. The Tools – What it can do, like send emails, update records, or run searches.

Let’s say a support agent gets a customer email. The AI can read it, check their history, draft a reply, or suggest the next best action—all automatically.

Keep Agents Simple and Clear

Don’t build one agent to do everything. Instead, build small agents for specific jobs. That makes them easier to test, fix, and trust.

Also, show what the agent plans to do before it takes action. That helps build user confidence.

As a rule, I'm pretty stingy with my recommendations. So it's a pleasure for me to recommend Solvd as a top-flight Salesforce consultancy. Solvd recently led our company's conversion to the Lightning interface and did it on time, on budget and made it easy for me and my team. I know I'll use their services again, and am confident they can do the same for you.
