How to Map fields from the Product to the Quote line in Revenue Cloud

When you’re using Revenue Cloud, you may want to pass details—like an Installation Date—from a product to a quote line. In the old CPQ system, this was easy. You just made a field with the same name on both, and Salesforce would move the info.

In Revenue Cloud, it’s a bit different. It takes a few more steps, but you get more control.

“It’s a little more complex than CPQ, but it gives you a lot more flexibility,” – Jared Christensen, SOLVD Consultant

Here’s a simple way to do it:

Step 1: Make the Fields

First, make the same field (like Installation Date) on both the Product and Quote Line objects.

Step 2: Clone the Context

Next, find the Product Discovery Context that’s already there. Make a copy (or “clone”) of it. You’ll use this copy to make changes. We do this because some changes can’t be done with the original version.

“Even though cloning isn’t usually best practice, for this use case, it’s required,” – Jared Christensen, SOLVD Consultant

Step 3: Add the Field

In the new version of the context, go to the part called Category Product. Add your custom field (like Installation Date) there. Make sure the field type matches—if it’s a date, keep it a date.

Step 4: Set Up the Mapping

Now you tell Revenue Cloud how to move the data:

  1. From Product to Category Product
  2. From Category Product to Sales Transaction Item
  3. From Sales Transaction Item to Quote Line

At each step, you’re just matching the same field name.

Step 5: Update Settings

Once your mapping is done, go update these parts of Revenue Cloud to use your new context:

  • Product Discovery Settings
  • Pricing Procedures
  • Product Qualification Procedures

Make sure they all point to your updated context and that it’s turned on.

Step 6: Test It

Now test it out:

  • Add a product to a quote
  • Look at the quote line
  • You should see the custom info (like Installation Date) already filled in

If it works, you’re all set!

Extra Tip: Use Attributes If You Can

If you just need to carry data from the product to the quote and don’t need a lot of rules, using Attributes might be easier. Attributes move through the process without extra setup.

But if you do need to move info into a custom field, the steps above are the way to do it.

As a rule, I'm pretty stingy with my recommendations. So it's a pleasure for me to recommend Solvd as a top-flight Salesforce consultancy. Solvd recently led our company's conversion to the Lightning interface and did it on time, on budget and made it easy for me and my team. I know I'll use their services again, and am confident they can do the same for you.
