The 4-Step Framework I Use for AI in Salesforce

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way businesses approach automation within Salesforce. With powerful features and unprecedented flexibility, Salesforce empowers teams to make rapid advancements in their orgs. However, granting AI unrestricted control without careful oversight poses significant risks—especially in production environments where the margin for error is minimal.

This blog post outlines a proven four-step framework for maintaining necessary oversight while harnessing AI to push meaningful and safe changes to your Salesforce org.

Step 1: Set the Context

Establishing and updating context is essential at the start of every session with your AI tool. While it’s important to provide enough background, giving too much or too little can hinder results. To strike the right balance, feed natural language prompts, documentation, or meeting notes into your AI—such as Claude or another enterprise-ready AI model. Iterating on the context with your AI at the outset leads to much more effective outcomes later on.

Step 2: Plan Mode

Many AI tools provide a dedicated plan mode, enabling a focused read-write exchange to collaboratively develop a step-by-step approach with your AI. Resist the temptation to rush straight to making changes. By collaborating with your AI in plan mode, you can map out a robust methodology and reduce the risk of encountering bugs or chaotically structured output later. The planning stage ensures your AI’s actions align with your goals and are executed in a controlled environment.

Step 3: Understand (Don’t Skip This Step)

A critical, often overlooked stage is ensuring you thoroughly understand what you are prompting the AI to do. This doesn’t mean you need to know every line of code generated, but you should grasp the overarching goal, expected outputs, dependencies, and potential risks associated with the changes. This knowledge enables you to prompt, guide, and test your AI’s output more effectively.

Step 4: Iterate in Small Steps

After context has been set, the plan developed, and understanding secured, it’s time to write code and implement changes. Avoid deploying everything at once. Instead, break down the plan into manageable pieces and build incrementally. Begin with foundational elements and gradually layer on complexity. By implementing change in small chunks, you can easily review, undo, or adjust as needed—ensuring a stronger and safer end result.

Applying this four-step framework leads to more reliable outcomes and reduces risk, even as the speed and potential of AI-driven automation in Salesforce accelerates. While AI is invaluable for coding, testing, and ideation, human oversight remains essential for quality and safety.

Leverage this framework for consistently successful Salesforce automation projects—and maintain control as your organization innovates with AI.

From my initial call with Spencer through project implementation with John and Evan, my experience with the SOLVD team was excellent. They were quick to understand our business needs, clear when explaining the reasoning behind proposed solutions, transparent when reporting on progress and timeline, and all around enjoyable to work with. Would highly recommend and looking forward to continue working with them in the future!

As a rule, I'm pretty stingy with my recommendations. So it's a pleasure for me to recommend Solvd as a top-flight Salesforce consultancy. Solvd recently led our company's conversion to the Lightning interface and did it on time, on budget and made it easy for me and my team. I know I'll use their services again, and am confident they can do the same for you.
