Automating Salesforce interactions with AI models like Claude and ChatGPT can transform business processes, making key data and insights accessible through a conversational interface. This guide outlines how to set up a direct Claude integration in Salesforce, allowing anyone in your organization to access Salesforce data—no technical expertise required.

Step 1: Create an External Client App in Salesforce

Begin by setting up an external client app in Salesforce. Choose a relevant name and input a valid contact email. Under the API settings, enable OAuth authentication. You’ll also need to add a callback URL. This URL can be found via the Salesforce site, specifically under hosted MCP server settings.

Tip: While this guide focuses on connecting with Claude, the same basic steps apply if you’re using tools like Postman, Cursor, or ChatGPT.

Next, paste the callback URL into the appropriate field in Salesforce. Under OAuth Scopes, select:

  • Access Salesforce hosted MCP servers
  • Perform requests at any time

In the Security section, deselect previously chosen options and select:

  • Require Proof Key for Code Exchange
  • Issue JSON Web Token (JWT)

Click ‘Create’ to finish the external client app setup.

Step 2: Save Your Client App Credentials

After creating your external client app, go to its settings, scroll to the OAuth section, and copy the consumer key. This key is required when you configure the custom connector in Claude.

Step 3: Set Up an MCP Server

Navigate to the MCP servers setup in Salesforce. While advanced users may create custom servers with tailored permissions, most integrations are straightforward. The S Object setting grants users permission to view and edit records natively in the Claude chatbox. Activate the server by clicking the ‘Activate’ button.

Step 4: Build a Custom Connector in Claude

Within Claude, navigate to the connectors section and opt to add a custom connector. Name the connector (e.g., Salesforce). Then, paste the OAuth client ID (the consumer key you copied earlier) and the Remote MCP Server URL (from your MCP server configuration in Salesforce). Click ‘Add’ to proceed.

Step 5: Set Permissions for Claude

With the connection established, review and set the permissions for Claude. You can select between options such as Always Allow, Needs Approval, and Blocked for various actions. Ensure this configuration aligns with your organization’s AI usage policy.

Step 6: Query Salesforce Data Using Claude

With everything configured, you can now query Salesforce data directly from within Claude’s chat interface. For example, requesting “Show me all of my Salesforce accounts” will prompt Claude to retrieve and neatly organize account data from Salesforce, all without leaving the Claude terminal.
